Tanjong Katong Secondary School & 3rd day of the school

Profile & History

Name : Tanjong Katong Secondary School
Year Founded : 1954

Tanjong Katong Secondary School (TK) was established as a pioneer Technical School in 1956. Many people then regarded it as a Trade School for boys who were considered less academically inclined for a proper secondary education. Intensive campaigning had to be carried out to convince the public that the school could offer educational standards equal to other secondary schools in Singapore. Several major historical events subsequently took place.

Major historical events:

1969

The school became co-educational, the new extensions were completed and Technical Pre-University classes were introduced.

1970

TK conducted classes from Technical Three to Pre-University Two.

1979

The Centralized Workshops, catering for Lower Secondary pupils and Basic Four pupils came under the main school administration. The teaching staff increased to 130 and the student population rose to almost 5000 of which 3000 were visiting students. The first batch of the 3-Year Pre-University Course pupils sat for the 'A' Level examination in 1981.

1993

The word "Technical" was deleted from the school's name following a change in education policy.

1995

The school started to function as a single session school. TKGS moved to their new building and TK took over their old site enabling the school to have enough classrooms to go single session.

1997

GCE '0" level results were the best in eight years. TK's mean subject grade per student improved to 2.82. The achievement served as a benchmark for the whole school community.

1998

TK moved to its new building at 130 Haig Road.

2000

Mayor Eugene Yap officially opened the new school building on April 22. The theme of the official opening was “I Believe I Can Fly”.The school began to offer Higher Malay and Higher Chinese in its main curriculum to its Secondary One Students.
